I re-learned a very valuable lesson today, one I'm well aware of but apparently the universe decided it was time I was reminded in a very rude way. Regularly save your work!
I had just finished adding the finishing touches to my latest blog entry and was just about to read it to my adoring fans (daughter, wife, cat and turtles). All I needed to do was hit the save button or for the universe to allow me just 2 mins more so I could read it and hit the publish button. But alas, my beautiful lady had just finished the vacuuming and was in the process of packing up. I managed to read the first paragraph when my screen went blank! WTF! You can't be serious!
I looked over to my ever so innocent looking luddite lady standing there behind my computer holding the power cord for the vacuum. The look of confusion and obliviousness on her face was apparent as she tried to figure out the reason for the tirade of colourful language, grunts, moans and numerous unintelligible noises.
"Please don't tell me you pulled the computer power cord out!" I demanded..
"Of course not! This is the vacuums cord." She replied, quite indignant.
"Well the power has just gone out to my computer! Did you turn the power off?!"
"NO...! Well... actually... might have. it was an accident!" She replied as she recognized the look of disbelief, shock, horror and numerous other negative adjectives of which I am still unable to articulate due to my ordeal.
OK I know, I know! Don't blow things out of proportion. Yeah, yeah fair call. But I'm a pretty crappy typist and transferring thoughts to words is a bit of a struggle for me. So, when I watched my afternoon's effort disappear from the face of the earth I was mildly agitated and daunted by the thought of having to re-do all that had just been done (and un-done.) including all the changes to my webpages layouts and set up.
At this stage I was kind of expecting some form of apology. "I'm sorry babe!" Would've done, "Ooops! So sorry!" Or perhaps more well thought out and constructed apology such as... "I'm so sorry babe! I know you've been working on that all day and I really didn't mean to." Any of these would've been good even great. And, I know she didn't mean to. Sadly, sometimes emotions take over and the volume rises a bit and bad words flow. Not proud of my self but what is done is done.
All in all the situation lasted about 20 seconds and I removed myself to have a smoke and finish my coffee. Leaving my lady, daughter my lady's friend all doing their best impersonations of a ROFLCOPTER in the lounge.
I felt a bit crap that I had raised my voice over such an insignificant matter (no matter how frustrating) Shit happens right. So when I returned from my self imposed exile I went straight to the kitchen to help with dinner prep. I then swallowed my pride returned to the lounge and apologized for raising my voice and assure her I knew it was accidental. At which point there was silence, follow by "it's ok" then some more silence. I might be a mere male however I've seen enough crappy television to know that this is the point my lady is supposed to return the apology and we hug and kiss, followed by a cut scene to us all sitting on a couch laughing and the credits rolling....
Mmmmm OK. maybe later.
Several hours pass, and we've carried on with our lives just fine. Now comes my second lesson for the day. The female apology.
We got in to a discussion about something obviously unimportant, since I can't remember, which led to me pointing out that it was interesting that despite the fact that she had in fact lost several hours worth of my work that I had ended up apologizing to her and had yet to receive one back. What the hell was I thinking! Learn to shut the hell up dude! I was duly put back in my place and in formed in no uncertain terms that she had indeed sincerely apologized! I quickly scanned my memories for such and event. File not found! I queried this apology!
I have now been re-educated and fully understand that the statement "it was an accident!" was the apology.
I somehow think we're living by different rules.
Que sera sera. Happily married again.
Made me Stop and think!
